DAYS OF OUR LIVES: GENDER IN AUSTRALIA
Offered: SEMESTER 2 each year In Days Of Our Lives: Gender In Australia, we examine a series of major events and situations that arouse public debate in everyday Australian society. We will ask, why is gender implicated in all areas of our everyday lives and how is it implicated in the issues that animate debate in Australia today, as well as whose voices are heard in those debates? The ways that ethnicity and class modify and give meaning to such debates will also be a central concern of the unit. Specific contemporary issues will provide a focus for the consideration of the broader dimensions of power, inequality and the politics of representation as it shapes those debates. Issues canvassed may be drawn from a range of fields, including science, medicine and technology; health and social welfare; the law, government, sport and leisure, and the popular media.
As well as studying a particular contemporary content, students will be introduced to some of the methodological and epistemological issues raised by interdisciplinary Women’s Studies approaches.
