Globalizing culture’s impact on young Australians’ national and gender iden
Researcher: Prof Chilla BulbeckThis study, conducted with colleagues Chris Beasley and Greg McCarthy, focuses on film as a mass visual cultural medium in a global world, considered in the context of the overwhelming dominance of the American film industry, in particular the dominance of the mainstream, ‘Hollywood’ film industry. A unique data set on the political impact of films on young Australians’ opinions and responses to American and Australian films within the context of theories of globalisation is being collected and analysed. The project provides an original and much needed empirical contribution to national citizenship and educational policy debates concerning the ways in which young people’s sexual subjectivities and national identities and sympathies are influenced by their film viewing habits.
